Renowned hairstylist Jonathan Antin has been seen on television in many shows such as ABC’s Extreme Makeover, the E! I have tried the Green Rootine Dry Shampoo Brush On Hair Powder ($19.00 USD .3 oz). There are tons of brands with dry shampoo on the market these days. The idea is that it will soak up oil and make your hair seem fresh, even when it hasn’t been washed for a day or two. Most dry shampoos have squirt on nozzles or spray. The Green Rooting Dry Shampoo has a brush that is built in the bottle that dispenses the product into your hair. The brush is very easy to use. it has open/close dial that allows you to control the amount of powder that is released.

The website describes the products as, “a hair powder that cleanses and refreshes the hair and scalp without the use of water. Talc and aluminum hydroxide absorb oil, dirt pollutants and product build-up. Rids the scalp of impurities and will create volume at the root. The portable brush makes applying powder simple and convenient. What better way to extend the life of a blowout!”

Another unusual feature is that is available in two shades: Light is recommended for blonde, white or gray hair and Dark for black, brown or red hair. I use the Dark for my dark brown hair and it blends in really well so you don’t notice that there’s powder in the hair.

HerCut — A Cool, Innovative New Hair Care Line

I have recently tried an innovative hair care line called HerCut. What makes this line different, you ask? HerCut is the first hair care collections made to work with your haircut, not hair type.

The shampoos and conditioners ($22.00 USD each) in this line are pretty basic — the shampoo comes in Normal to Oily, Normal to Dry and Dry hair shampoo and the conditioners are available in Light, Medium and Deep conditioning formulas. I tried the Normal to Dry shampoo and the Deep conditioner and I liked them very much. Both formulas were creamy and moisturized my hair well. They smell soft and pretty too!

The products that truly make this line different are the catalysts ($28.00 USD). They are products that you put in your hair after cleansing and moisturizing that work with your hair on a molecular level to keep the hair looking perfect in your chosen cut. The five styles and descriptions of how the catalyst works are:

Cool, huh? I am using the Blunt catalyst and I love the formula. It is two product in one — a gel and a cream that dispense in unison. I rub the products together in my hands and apply on wet hair. I then blow dry and my blunt cut looks great. My daughter uses the Shag catalyst on her medium shaggy layers and they do seem more separated.

Kérastase Age Premium Collection

Kérastase Paris, a leader in luxury haircare, has recently launched the Age Premium Collection. This collection includes internal and external regimens designed to address the unique needs of mature hair and scalp.

Of course skin, eyes and bones aren’t the only parts of our bodies affected by aging — our hair and scalp gets ravaged by time, too. Hair grows in repeated cycles of various phases, anagen (growth); catagen (regressing); and telogen (resting). As we age, the life cycle of the hair gradually tends to become deregulated and the amount of hair in the growth phase decreases. In addition, the production of the substance of the hair is disrupted, while micro-circulation slows down depriving the bulb of its nutrients. The hair loses density and becomes fragile, dull and porous.

Oscar Blandi Pronto Colore Root Touch-Up and Highlighting Pen

So being of a uh, certain age, I’m starting to go gray…shhhh…don’t tell anyone. Actually I have been coloring my hair for a few years now. First just for fun, but now if I don’t do my roots in a while — the wiry, witchy grays come a callin’. When I heard about Oscar Blandi’s Pronto Colore Root Touch-Up & Highlighting Pen ($23.00 USD), I was really excited to try it. This is a very portable little pen, about the size of a tube of mascara, that is easy as to use as it is to carry. You twist the pen until the color saturates the brush, then brush it on the roots or squeeze some onto your hand and dab it on your hair. I like to brush it on then blend it with my fingers.

The pen comes in the following shades: -Beige Blonde: for pale to light blonde hair that’s natural, single-processed, and/or highlighted
-Light Golden Blond: for medium blonde hair with natural or highlighted gold or caramel tones
-Neutral Brown: for medium brown hair with natural or highlighted neutral tones
-Warm Reddish Brown: for medium brown hair with red tones, brown hair with red or auburn highlights, or red hair with natural or highlighted brown tones
-Dark Brown/Black: for dark brown and rich black hair that’s natural or single-processed

I own this in two different shades; Dark Brown to match my hair and Warm Reddish Brown to add fun highlights. To do this, I separate a strand of hair and “paint” it with the brush. It is fun to do and looks great on. This is fun for a night out or just to mix up your look.

I like that this is a safe product, even pregnant women can use it. The formula is also free of ammonia and peroxide. For convenience sake, it is fast drying and washes right out.

New Launches from Neil George Hair Care

The Neil George salon in Beverly Hills was founded in April 2005 by hairstylists Amanda George and Neil Weisberg. Their line of hair care products were created to keep hair healthy and shiny, by using natural ingredients. I recently tried a couple of their new products:

Refresh Dry Shampoo ($21.00 3.2 oz) – Have you tried a dry shampoo yet? They are great if you are unable to wash your hair or if you love your style (or blow-out today) and do want to wash it away. Refresh Dry Shampoo has a unique blend of plants and fruits to absorb oil and sebum from the scalp, restoring health and refreshing hair without having to wash it. The website states, “A powerful complex of Jaborandi, Cherimoya and Gotu Kola combine to stimulate circulation, optimize hair health and provide a dose of niacin and thiamin, improving the strength of the hair root itself. Paraben Free.”

I spray this at the roots of my hair and wait 30 seconds, then rub it in. It has a nice fresh smell and doesn’t leave my hair stiff or dry. My hair remains soft and manageable with this spray and is noticabley less oily at the roots. This is a good product to have around for bad hair days!

Perfect Hold Hairspray ($22.00 8.5 oz) – This flexible hold hairspray includes complex blend of exclusive oils such as Shikekai oil, Eclipta Oil and Indian Gooseberry Oil that claims to create an enriching base while Panthenol and UV protectors fortify and strengthen the hair. Both the scalp and hair are conditioned without buildup and protected from over styling through the spray’s long-lasting moisturization.

I don’t usually use hairspray on my long, blunt cut hair. I do use it if I straighten or curl my hair. But I have been using this ever day, and I really like that it smooths my hair and doesn’t leave it stiff or sticky. The style lasts all day, too! I think this will be great for the Spring and Summer when I am outside more often because of the UV protectors and that the oils will help protect from the frizzies.

White Sands ER Fusion

I then applied my normal styling products and blew my hair dry. I don’t think it sealed my hair cuticle, but I do like how soft and manageable my hair is after use. Also, my hair color does seem brighter and my hair is fairly shiny. For me this is a great treatment for dry, winter hair. I think if I did have a hair dryer that I could stick my head under, it would have worked even better.

The scent of these products is a soft lavender and it is very soothing.

Nourishing Coconut Milk Styling Mousse ($6.99 USD) — I love hair mousse. It’s so fluffy and fun and it seems to be making a comeback. This great product contains coconut oil for moisture and strength and ultra whipped egg white proteins give hydration and balance. When I use this on clean, damp hair, it makes my hair very soft and manageable. It smells amazing, too!

Must Have Hair Product — Shu Uemura Art of Hair Essence Absolue

In November 2009, Shu Uemura launched — and quickly sold out of — a new hair product, Essence Absolue. This product is already so popular because it is touted to restore even the dries of hair.

So, what’s the big deal? This golden essence is infused with Camellia Oil; a highly treasured and coveted, age-old ingredient used by Geishas to make hair soft and shiny. Essence Absolue also claims to moisturize and protect the hair fiber, provides intense nutrition, protects against the sun’s UV rays, and adds shine to the hair.

The website states, “Conscious of the various causes and needs of dry hair, ESSENCE ABSOLUE has been carefully designed as a multi-use elixir, repairing dry hair on an individual basis in the following ways:

I have used this as a pre-shampoo treatment by adding a few drops to my wet hair before shampoo. I also use it as a leave in and a finisher to my dry ends. I have noticed that my hair is shinier, more manageable and has less flyaways in the dry air. I am looking forward to trying this in the humid Kansas City summer — I think it will make all the difference on my frizzy hair!

Although this product is pricey, it does what it claims. My hair is soft and shiny and smells fantastic. I highly recommend Essence Absolue!

I have tested the Weightless Shine Spray and the Firm Hold Hairspray. Like all TIGI products, the fragrances are fantastic. The shine spray gives my hair needed shine in the winter, when the cold air dulls it. I then like to spray the hairspray on my roots first, then all over for lift as well as hold. With these two final steps, whether I have straightened my hair or kept it wavy, I have a full, shiny ‘do that lasts all day!

My hair is thin and dry and it can get very frizzy. My favorite product is the original Moroccanoil. After I wash my hair, I pour a little of it in my hands, rub my hands together, than smooth it on my hair. I also apply a little more on my dry hair, and my hair stays soft and shiny all day. I also want to try using it on my hair before coloring it. The oil is supposed to keep the hair shiny after coloring and the color may last longer. Cool!

I also loved the hydrating mask. I have to deep condition my hair a lot, to keep it soft and this one does the trick! The styling cream works wonders on my 10-year-old daughter’s thick, thick hair and the shine spray is fun for a little extra glimmer!
