Three Gorges Dam Front Cover
Three Gorges Dam Front Cover

Three Gorges Dam by Thomas V. Harris — New Yorker Michael Brannigan and the People’s Republic of China are concluding a triumphant week. The PRC’s top energy consultant has fallen in love with Australian geophysicist Kylie Ryan while traveling in Xinjiang Province. President Lao Ming is in Beijing hosting a game-changing summit with the United States. CNN is broadcasting the new reality: the Communist juggernaut has surpassed the United States as the world’s top superpower.

Brannigan’s train is retracing Marco Polo’s historic journey—when the Silk Road Express reaches the Far East’s Far West, his team of engineers will assist the Chinese in developing the world’s richest oil fields. As Brannigan heads deeper into the Taklamakan Desert, President Lao’s motorcade is approaching the end of its parade route. In a few hours, the president will arrive at the Hall of Purple Light to celebrate his victory.

All that changes in two blinks of an eye. Television cameras capture the crumbling of the Communist regime while China’s Young Turks and Fighting Monks rock the country. Caught up in the violence, Brannigan’s love affair meets a tragic end. Hostiles are raging and the Chinese miracle is self-destructing. In the midst of the turmoil, Brannigan returns to China for a hush-hush assignment at Three Gorges Dam, the world’s largest hydroelectric facility. There, he overcomes his demons and finds lasting happiness. Everything is coming up aces.

FabFitFun Summer 2018 Subscription Box Review

img_1241.jpg

My Summer FabFitFun box has arrived! I subscribed in 2016, but stopped at the end of the year.  My last box was Winter 2016.  I liked the subscription but wanted to try something else.

I’m back now.  I saw a spoiler (I’ll tell you which one below), and had to resubscribe!  You can join FabFitFun here.  This is a referral link.  You will get $10 off with it!

IMG_1245

FabFitFun is a quarterly subscription box. Each season they send you a box of $200+ worth items in categories like beauty, fashion, and fitness. Ir Reatils for $49.9.  You can get and annual subscription $179.99 for 4 boxes. You can also choose a lot of your items with an annual subscription. This month, I received:

Summer & Rose Beach Towel — $55.00                                                                                         tarte tarteist™ PRO glow highlight & contour palette — $45.00                                                 Pier 1 Imports Marble Ring Dish — $14.99                                                                                     Erth TU Y YO Ring — $55.00                                                                                                         FOREO LUNA! fofo — $89.00                                                                                                       COOLA Classic Face SPF 50 White Tea — $32.00                                                                     Vasanti Brighten Up! Enzymatic Face Rejuvenator — $29.00                                             ELEMIS Papaya Enzyme Peel — $45.00

Summer & Rose Beach Towel — This is a microfiber towel.  It’s very soft, but I don’t know how absorbent it is.  I’ll have to test it out at the pool!

IMG_1259

Pier 1 Imports Marble Ring Dish — This is gorgeous!  I like that it’s very classic looking and will work with all room decor.  The ERTH x Fab Fit Fun “Tu Y Yo” Ring is really cute.  I don’t know if it’s something I will wear, I may give it to my daughter for her birthday.

Foreo Luna Fofo — This is why I purchased the box.  I had a Foreo original size (a little bigger) before and loved it!  It cleans the face so nicely!  This is a brand new model.  It is powered by Bluetooth technology and advanced skin sensors to create a totally personalized profile, which is sent straight to the newly launched FOREO LUNA™ app. I’m excited to try this out!

tarte tarteist™ PRO glow highlight & contour palette — First of all, this smells amazing!  I think it’s supposed to be chocolate scented (I LOVE the scented makeup trend).I’ve just used this a few times.  I like the powder sculpt shade.  It’s a nice cool toned contour.  The top two shades match my skin tone and I really like them. I might try the other two as eye shadows.

I’m almost out of my SPF moisturizer, so I will be using the Coola face sunscreen.  It feels really nice on.  I haven’t tried the Elemis peel yet, but I will this weekend.  I did try the Vasanti scrub, and it left my skin so soft!  I think all of this skincare is amazing for the summer, my skin will be smooth and protected.

I really liked this box.  The value was amazing for $49.99.  The total of what I received was worth $364.99! I think this is the best box I received from them.  I definitely think I will stick around for the fall box.  I might even upgrade to annual to be able to choose more of my items.  We’ll see!

BoxyCharm Subscription Box Review — May 2018

IMG_1037

My May BoxyCharm arrived a few days ago.  It came much earlier this month.  I’m always excited to receive it!

Boxycharm is just $21 a month for 5-6 beauty items, most of them full-sized.  It’s an amazing way to try new makeup and beauty tools!

Here is what I received:

IMG_1042

Pur Cosmetics Sculptor Highlight & Contour Palette ($30 USD)

Aesthetica Cosmetics Pro Brush Series: 3-Piece Eyeliner, Brow & Spoolie Brush Set ($45 USD)

Aesthetica Cosmetics Brush P12 Brush ($27 USD)

CoverFX Blurring Primer ($38 USD)

Pretty Vulgar The Ink Gel Eyeliner ($24 USD)

Beauty Creations Matte Lip Gloss in Sweet Heart ($10 USD)

The value of this box is amazing — $170!  It’s BoxyCharm’s 5th birthday and they really gave a high value box!

IMG_1051IMG_1052

This Pur Cosmetics contour palette is so nice!  It smells like chocolate, which is fun.  I did swatch this (all swatches are below), but then gave it to my daughter.  I didn’t keep it because the contour is way too dark for me, and I have plenty of highlighters.  It did swatch nicely though.

I really like the brand Pur Cosmetics.  And I have a review of some of their new products coming soon!

img_1044.jpg  We get brushes in almost every BoxyCharm.  I don’t use all of them, but I will use these.  The P12 is so soft, and is nice for bronzing or blush. I’ve haven’t played with the eye trio yet, but I will.  I am excited to try them with the new liner!

img_1049.jpg

This Cover FX primer is my favorite item in the box, and is worth getting this box!  It has a light tint and is dimethicone based.  It claims to “blurs the appearance of pores, fine lines, and other imperfections for ultra-smooth airbrushed skin.”

A little of this goes a long way.  It does blur my pores and makes them appear smaller.  It’s really nice under my Flower Beauty Light Illusion foundation!

IMG_1047.JPG This little ink pot liner is so cute!  And it holds a lot of product!   I have swatched it and it glides on very easily.  I am going to play with it soon on my eyes.  I usually don’t wear black eyeliner, but it’s fun for going out. Plus, the pot is too cute not to keep out on display.

IMG_1050

I have’t tried anything from Beauty Creations before.  This is called a Matte Lip Gloss in the shade Sweet Heart.  But, it’s basically a liquid lipstick.  This color is too bright for me, so I gave it to my daughter.

Here are the swatches:

IMG_1056.JPG

From left to right, the eyeliner, the matte lip gloss, and the Pur contour palette.

So this month was a win for me for the primer alone.  I am really loving it.  I will also use the brushes and I’ll try the eyeliner.  I gave the lipstick and contour palette to my daughter who will love it.  So it is a successful box for me!

There are already a couple of spoilers for the June box.  We’ll get the colorful Alamar Cosmetics eye shadow palette and a Sol de Janiero product. I’m excited for both!

Do you get BoxyCharm?  What was your favorite product this month?

BoxyCharm Subscription Box Review — April 2018

img_0860.jpg

My April BoxyCharm finally arrived.  It was supposed to be here last week, but stopped moving on Friday.  I got it yesterday and I was so happy!

Boxycharm is just $21 a month for 5-6 beauty items, most of them full-sized.

Here is what I received:

IMG_0859

I am so happy with this box — even though I will probably only use two or three of the items.  Spoilers were released saying that we would get 1 of 5 variations of the ColourPop palette.  I have 3 of the 5 that were shown, so I thought for sure I would receive one I had, but I got a new one (to me)!  And I really wanted the Element of Surprise!
Lets start with that:

IMG_0863IMG_0864IMG_0865IMG_0866

First of all, I love the color purple.  The packaging on this is stunning! This is a pretty neutral palette with a couple of pops of color and a couple of shimmers/glitters. I think this will be amazing for all seasons.  I will do a palette review of this sometime — I’ll just add it to the pile of palettes I need to review!

img_0862.jpgThis is the other item I was really excited about.  I’ve used them once and like them okay,  they are a little larger than the blending and shadow brushes I usually use. I need to play with them more.  They are beautiful!  I love the colors and the little gems.  The brushes are P15, eyes shadow brush (pink) and the L34 Blend Beauty (purple).  The handles also say BoxyCharm, so they must be a collaboration.

img_0867.jpg I’m not sure about this.  I do have larger pores, but I think its due to aging.  And my pores are always larger during allergy season, so I don’t know if I want to mess with them.  We’ll see.  I might sell this on eBay.

img_0868.jpg This brand gets really good reviews.  But I can’t use this.  My brows are so dark their almost black.  I will pass it on to my daughter who is blond.  She will love it!

IMG_0869

I have no idea what to do with this!  I found out a couple of months ago that we were getting MAC in a future box and I was so excited.  The issue is that I wear nude or light pink lip colors.  Plus, I don’t know who I could give this to — I don’t have any friends wh like Gothic purple lips!  Lol!  I’m sure someone could rock this, so I might sell it on eBay.

Next month the spoiler brands are Pretty Vulgar, Cover FX and Pur Cosmetics.  I like all of those brands.  The Pretty Vulgar is a pot of cream or gel eyeliner.  It’s super cute packaging.  I haven’t heard of the others yet, so we’ll see.  I think I’ll stay with BoxyCharm at least one more month.  Honestly, even thought it’s always an amazing value, I only use one or two of the products I get each month.

Do you subscribe to BoxyCharm?  What palette did you get this month?

New Target Beauty Box Reviews

IMG_0752

Last week Target had four new limited edition beauty boxes for sale online.  I guess these have been available for purchase at some Target stores, but they decided to sell them online, too.  Each box was $7.

I chose two of the boxes to purchase, the Treat Yourself box that contains pampering bath, body and face products and the Wakeup and Makeup box that has makeup and other products to help you start the day. These two are no longer available online, but they are available at stores near me, so you might be able to pick one up.  Luckily, the other two boxes are still available online. They are Be YOU(tiful) and All the Masks.  Check them out!

I want to share what was in each box.  First is the Treat Yourself:

img_0760.jpg

IMG_0759

img_0758.jpg

  • Olay Regenerist Whips
  • Burt’s Bees Tinted Lip Balm in Red Dahlia
  • ME!Bath Bath Bomb
  • Bodycology Free & Lovely Coconut & Rose Body Butter
  • Luxe by Mr. Bubble Bath Meltaway
  • Honest Beauty Refreshingly Clean Gel Cleanser
  • Dr. Teals Pink Himalayan Foaming Bath

I chose this box because I wanted to try the Olay Whips and my family love to take baths, so the bath products are a win, too.  I’ll probably give the Burt’s Bees balm away because I don’t wear dark colors, but I will probably try everything else!

Here is the Wakeup and Makeup Box:

IMG_0763

img_0764.jpg

IMG_0766

  • e.l.f. Beautifully Bare Blending Brush
  • e.l.f. Beautifully Bare Face Palette
  • Sonia Kashuk Brush Cleansing Wipes
  • Dove Dry Spray Invisible Sheer Fresh
  • Dove Dry Shampoo Coconut
  • COVERGIRL Peacock Flare Mascara 785 Extreme Black
  • Honest Beauty Refreshingly Clean Makeup Remover Wipes

This is my favorite of the two boxes.  This was only $7!  The two elf products together are $14 — $6 for the brush and $8 for the palette. So for me those made the box worth it.  But there is also a mascara, deodorant and other goodies that make it such an amazing deal! I’m looking forward to playing with the products!

Have you picked up any of these boxes?  If so, which ones?

BoxyCharm Subscription Box Review — March 2018

IMG_0591

I have been anxiously awaiting my March 2018 BoxyCharm!  I received it a few days  ago and am excited to share it with you.  I really like this subscription.  You get a lot of makeup for a great price!

Boxycharm is just $21 a month for 5-6 beauty items, most of them full-sized.

Here’s what I got this month:

img_0594.jpg

img_0595.jpg

This Pretty Vulgar blush is in the shade Hush Blush.  The description is Rose, but it is looks like a neutral, peachy pink to me.  Sorry about the photos!  The top one looks darker, I think it was just the light in my office.  Here’s a swatch:

IMG_0599

This blush is really pigmented! Plus there is a lot in the pan, .2 oz/ 6 g.  There was another variant shade, Prim Vixen, that is a bright pink.  I was hoping to get that shade, but this is pretty. I might give it a try and if I don’t like it, I’ll pass it on!  The packaging is beautiful, though!

IMG_0601

IMG_0603.JPGStunning! This was the item I was most excited to receive.  I love eye shadows and I love PUR Cosmetics.  So, win win!  I will be doing a review with swatches in the near future (I still have the palette from my January Boxy to review, as well as a couple other palettes).

I have worn this a couple of time and am really loving the pigmentation and shades so far.

IMG_0605.JPG This is such a cute eye shadow brush set!  The bristles are pretty soft and the handles are wood, which is a nice touch!  I am going to hold on to these and use them when I need a change in my brushes.  Or give them to someone who needs them.

img_0596.jpg

img_0597.jpg

I love trying new mascara!  I was excited to try this one.  I love the shape of the brush and butter LONDON’s products are usually good quality.  I have tried this twice, and unfortunately, it flakes on me!  The first day was taking my daughter to the anime festival last weekend.  When I got home, my mascara was flaked under my eyes and on my cheeks pretty badly.  I wasn’t sure if I had rubbed my eyes (because teenage girls and anime), so I wore it again today.  I’ve only worn it a few hours and there are a few flakes under my eyes.  I wonder if other people have had this problem?

img_0598.jpg

These are an interesting item that was included!  I’ve read the back of the box, and it looks like this is a treatment.  You apply it under the eye and leave them on for 30 minutes.  And for best results, use for three consecutive days.  There are three in the box, so I wonder if after the three days, my under eyes will look 10 years younger??? I can dream, right!

I think I will start these on Thursday or Friday and see what happens!

So this month’s BoxyCharm is one of my favorite yet!  The eye shadow palette is worth the price to me. The blush packaging is so gorgeous and it is highly pigmented.  It might be a great summer blush for me once I get a bit of a (faux) tan.  The brushes will be used or happily gifted.  The mascara may be a no go, though.  Which is too bad.  And I’m going to give the eye gels a whirl.

Next month, the spoiler is that every box gets a ColourPop eye shadow palette!  You all know how I love my ColourPop.  I hope I get one I don’t have, but if I do, I’ll gift it to a good home!

What did you get in your BoxyCharm this month?  You can subscribe here if you are interested in receiving an amazing box full of makeup!

BoxyCharm Subscription Box Review – January 2018

IMG_0134IMG_0133

I just received my BoxyCharm January 2018 box a couple of days ago, and I wanted to share it with you.  This is one of my favorite subscription boxes ever!

Boxycharm is just $21 a month for 5-6 beauty items, most of them full-sized.

Here’s what I received from BoxyCharm:

IMG_0135

As you can see, this box has amazing value.  If I paid full price for everything, it would be $152.99. Crazy!

img_0136.jpg

This primer is the product that I am most excited about trying.  I haven’t used it on my face, but I swatched it on my hand and it blurs and gives a little glow.  I’ve just started using primer again, so I am excited to give this a try!

img_0137.jpg

I have tried Brow Power before.  I love IT Cosmetics, but this is one product I don’t really use.  I have black brows and fair skin.  And my brows are still pretty thick, even as I get older.  So, I usually tweeze and shape and sometimes use a clear gel.  If I accentuate them with color, it looks way to dramatic on me.  So, I will probably re-home this pencil.

IMG_0140

Grande Lips plumpers are so nice, because they don’t tingle or irritate the lips.  But this shade is waaaay too dark for me!  I am going to give this away.

img_0145.jpg

This is very pretty, shimmery and intensely pigmented!  I plan to review this, because the colors are so pretty and I’m sure I’ll use this, but maybe as eye shadow…

IMG_0150

So, I’m not swatching anything this month, and this is the main reason.  The shade Punk in this compact is broken.  I was wondering why there was dark dust all over my items in the box, and this is why.  I am going to ask for a replacement, and we’ll see what they say!

These colors do look really pretty, though!

If I receive a replacement, I’ll review this palette, and I’ll review the Pur palette soon!  This month, I’ll be keeping the primer, Pur palette and eyeshadows.  I’ll probably find a new home for the lip plumper and maybe the Brow Power since I don’t really color my brows.  But this month was a real winner for me!  Gorgeous products and an amazing value!

Do you subscribe to Boxycharm?  What did you get this month?

Target Beauty Box Best of Boots Review

IMG_0065

img_0066.jpg

IMG_0070

I recently ordered a Target Best of Boots Beauty Box ($7 USD).  I haven’t ordered a monthly Target beauty box before.  This one was in addition to the January box.  It featured British brands, so I wanted to try it.  The products included are sample sizes.  I have linked to where you can purchase full sizes of each item:

No. 7 Restore and Renew Serum                                                                                                    No. 7 Airbrush Away Primer                                                                                                         Soap & Glory Righteous Butter Body Butter                                                                             Soap & Glory Pillow Plump Lip Gloss                                                                                   Botanics Shine Away Ionic Clay Mask                                                                                       Sleek MakeUP Eyeshadow Palette

IMG_0075.JPG

I have tried the Restore & Renew product before.  I received a full size product to review and loved it.  I used it up so quickly, that I’m going to try to make this last! It has a light Jill Texter that instantly absorbs into my skin. It’s so hydrating and makes my skin look very smooth. I also like using it on my neck.

This is my first time trying the Airbrush Away primer. It’s a blurring primer that makes my skin instantly looks smoother. I haven’t use primer for a long time, and I’m getting back into it now. This is really great one too!

IMG_0072 It’s funny, because I recently bought myself a Righteous Butter the same size as this one. I love the scent and feel of this body butter. And absorbs quickly and makes my skin so soft. I like the size because you can put it in your purse or take it on trips.

The Pillow Plump is in the shade Pinkwell. It’s a pretty pink color. It is very tingly on. I haven’t used a lip plumper’s for a long time, so it was a strange sensation. I do love that it is glossy and it’s kind of a natural look. But I don’t think I’ll use it every day.

IMG_0073I haven’t tried the Botanics Shine Away mask yet. It’s doesn’t really appeal to me.  I would give it away, but I keep getting these kind of masks and I think I’ve given one to each of my friends! This is my least favorite product in the box, but the others are amazing, so that’s okay!

IMG_0077IMG_0078IMG_0082

This palette is the very mini version of the When The Sun Goes Down Palette. It is so small, as you can see by the bottom photo with my fingers.  The pans are so small, it’s hard to get a brush in there.  I did manage and I did my yes with the bottom left gold and 4th bottom color and the formula is very nice.  I’m thinking about getting it in full size, but different shades.

A $5 off $20 coupon for these brands was included.  I might head to Target this weekend and pick up some Sleek cosmetics.  All of the brands are great, though.  Very nice box for the price!

Did you pick up the Target Boots box?  Or have you got a Target box before?

Julep Maven January 2018 Subscription Box Review

IMG_9970

My Julep Maven box recently came!  This is the January subscription box. The cost is $24.99 a month ($19.99 a month with a 3-month subscription).

I have been a subscriber for almost 5 years.  And I love it!  You don’t have to take a box each month, you can skip if you want to.  Which is so nice if I’m short a month or if I’m not feeling any of the items.  I skipped December, because I was a bit short of cash and I didn’t really need any of the products.

I also love that you can customize your box.  When I first started subscribing, I could choose from curated boxes, but now, I get to curate my own!  This month I chose a couple of polishes and a new face oil.

IMG_9971

IMG_9974

img_9975.jpg

The polishes are Geri, blushing beige cream and Shiloh, stormy aqua shimmer. I half I had to get Geri because it’s my sister’s name, but she spells it Jeri. It’s a really pretty soft neutral. But I think my favorite is Shiloh because it’s really shimmery and gorgeous for winter.

IMG_9972.JPG

img_9976.jpg

I also chose the Boost your Radiance Rosehip Seed Facial Oil. I’ve only tried it once so far and it was very hydrating. It’s a really good night treatment for me. I will be trying it more to see if it helps with the appearances of fine lines, which is one of its claims.

IMG_9849

The box contains:

Pure Cosmetics 3D Fiber Lash Mascara – ($30 USD)

Violet & Brooks Mosaic Crystal Earrings – ($28 USD)

Hallmark Home Holiday Cheeseboard – ($25 USD)

World’s Softest Cozy Low Socks – ($9.99 USD)

CST Treats Toffee and Biscotti –  ($11 USD)

Plus two wines (see below)

IMG_9863

Sorry for the blurry pic!  Also, I gave this away to someone who I think will love it, so I can’t take another photo.  This looks like a fun product, though!  I believe it’s a two step system of fibers and mascara.

IMG_9866

These are so pretty, and it’s hard to see from the picture, but they are really sparkly, too!  I don’t wear earrings but these are a great gift for someone who does.

IMG_9862 This cheeseboard is festive and fun!  The cheese knife is a little axe and it stays in the notch in the trunk — so cute!  Amazing for the holiday season.

IMG_9864.JPG I love getting socks!  I got a bunch for Christmas, which always makes me happy! These are extremely soft and I love the print.  I will wear them all winter long!

IMG_9865.JPG The toffee (on the left) was my favorite of the two.  The chocolate was smooth and the toffee was crisp and buttery.  The biscotti was nice, too.  Great with coffee.

IMG_9859 Here are the wines I received:

Speechless California Merlot ($24.99 USD) delivers aromas of dried figs, black currants and cinnamon, with flavors of anise and licorice, blackberry jam and notes of cloves and caraway.  I liked this okay.  Merlot’s aren’t my favorite reds because they are pretty dry.  This did have a nice, rich flavor to it.

NightVine Chardonnay ($27.99 USD) is perfect for the nights that require reflection and rejuvenation. This wine is from one of the most respected areas for Chardonnay in the Russian River Valley. Delivers aromas of ripe pear, vanilla, caramel, and citrus leading to flavors of whipped sweet cream, balanced oak and a buttery finish. I really like this chardonnay.  It’s crisp and bright.

Do you subscribe to Vine Oh!?  If so, how do you like it?  It’s a bit pricey, but you get two great quality wines and a box of goodies.  I’m going to keep subscribing for a little while at least!
