Holiday Makeup Gifts Guide — Sets That Can Be Split Between Friends!

What I think: I have wanted to try the Hot Rocks because they looked like they would brighten the complexion with the shimmering pink combination of colors. It’s always fun to try new eye shadow colors — eye shadows are such a fun way to switch up your look!

I have long loved translucent powder. I have never had good luck with matching colored powder to my skin tone. Fair is too light and light is too dark. Yes, I know, weird. But translucent powder matches all skin tones and leaves a great finish.       

That’s why I was excited to try Pur Minerals Perfectly Natural Everyday Balancing Makeup ($25.00 USD). I like to use this as a light powder foundation over concealer on my problem spots, but it can be applied over foundation, too. It combines mineral pigment with vitamin E, shea butter and oil-balancing sebaryl to stop shine.  

I like how easy this is to apply. When you sweep the brush across the powder, it loosens the minerals and they are captured in the brush. Then swirl it on the lid so that the minerals are push inside the brush. Next, buff all over the face for a beauftiful finish that lasts all day!

These products are all beautiful. I tested the lip liner, lipstick and shadows. I think the lip brush on the pencil is brilliant, you can blend your lips after applying pencil so that the line won’t be harsh, or use the brush with the lipstick or a gloss. The lipstick is very moisturizing and is a beautiful red. My favorite products were the shimmery shadows. They are soft, but really make the eyes stand out, because of the shimmer. Wear them with lots of black mascara and the eyes will stand out as much as your ruby-red lips!

Pure Beauty? Pur Minerals Now at Ulta

Intrigued by my foray into mineral makeup (bareMinerals) a couple of weeks ago, I decided to explore the Pur Minerals brand that is now being sold at Ulta.

The first item I tried was the 4-in-1 Pressed Mineral Makeup SPF 15 ($24.50 US). This is a very nice product. It is a pressed powder that glides on smoothly. It is made of, “pure mineral pigment ground to the smoothest texture and bound with soothing Shea Butter and Vitamin E”. This formula is good for my combination skin. It doesn’t cause breakouts or leave dry patches.

I also really liked the Mineral Eye Defining Pencil with Smudger ($16.50 US). I tried the Smoky Graphite pencil, a nice dark gray. This is a “state of the art, waterproof, smudge resistant eye color. Glides on easily and resists bleeding even when wet.” And it did stay on all day.

The third item I’m reviewing is the Mineral Lip Tint SPF 15 ($16.50 US) in Sandy Quartz, a pinky-peach color. The color is natural and pretty, but the feel of the product was a little dry. Some of the ingredients are Olive Oil, Mango Seed Extract, and Cocoa Seed Butter, so it should be a little more hydrating.

Another thing I really enjoy about mineral makeup is that after wearing for a while, my skin seems to improve. It becomes clearer and glows, even when I’m not wearing it.

I think the next time I try a mineral makeup it will be a drugstore brand. It would be nice to find a product that has the same benefits, at a more affordable price.
